In Sweden, fika is a daily break, traditionally involving coffee and treats. In truth, fika is about much more than caffeine and carbohydrates; it's a Swedish social institution, where friends gather to chat about life and current events.

Sweden is a country of many traditions, perhaps none as lovely as the concept of having a ‘Fika’. The word ‘Fika’ dates back many centuries to the 1700s, when coffee was introduced to Sweden and is a mixture of the letters for the Swedish word for coffee; kaffi (later kaffe). Fika is a normal practice at offices in Sweden. Some companies have 2 fika breaks, which are taken at about 9 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Most companies will have daily team meetings at 9 over a fika to plan the day and discuss current projects but obviously having 2 fika breaks takes time, and so this varies between companies and how much time people have that day.
